A Pig's Tale: Pig Named 6-7 Spared by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as granting clemency to Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. Clemency is justified for her. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued from the start of the commencement of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “May this pig enjoy a prosperous future free from concern.”
The event, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The animal, provided by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the modern linguistic fad of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a musical verse – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently declared “six-seven” its top term for the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said the event host, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the spirit of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe heritage and mercy in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and strong coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
