Adult Swim's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, shortly thereafter, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a surprise hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and helped it grow," stated Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially help usher in that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
