‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s road from injury table to success with Athletic

The debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta competed in English soil, an young playing for the youth squad against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in September 2015, he found the net. The second time he appeared in British turf, against the Black Cats following that, he converted. Another occasion, against the Citizens not long later, well, he did it once more. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at the sports complex in 2017, he found the back of the net. An excellent finish, also. “Actually,” he remarks, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve netted.” Thus the club did their duty: they took him off.

“I was furious,” the forward reveals, and then he starts laughing. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was in fine form. They kept me out of the second half: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I don’t know about the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea the validity, but even if they had called, I would have wanted to stay at Bilbao. I feel lucky to be here.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the facility, Bilbao, the morning session is set to begin; following that, the quick travel to Loiu airport and another flight to England, this time to play Newcastle in the Champions League on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. This is proving a challenging campaign for the club, due in part to the pressures of being here. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their last eight matches and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in the continental stage. However, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, the striker has been a final four contender in Europe, stopped at the gates a domestic final by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the club’s first trophy in a long wait. Currently he stands as the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a long period. “I never imagined this,” he says.

He considered it difficult enough just to make the first team and he was right. As the child of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that nurtured the coach, the legendary midfielder and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at seventeen but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he suffered a serious knee problem, dropped, a drop in category and a call back before he could truly get a chance, returning at 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta is preparing to face Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the top level but with every stage you go through you’re persisting and you can observe the approach. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in six games between his bow and February 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I suffered the ACL injury.

“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as something positive because it forced me to alter the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it aids growth. You develop habits new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I attended practice and then head home, as a youngster does. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Work, precaution. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, address that. If your ankles are a 10, enhance it further. All the minor details: perform them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles repeatedly. Highly robust. Reviewing old images: my physique was slight. Injuries are inevitable. Present-day images and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Peers are prepared, really ready; the same applies.”

Minutes are crucial. He left upset in that year, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in 40 games. With Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, effort, faith, and if one day a vacancy arises in your position, recall is possible. You have to be ready. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. After being leading scorer with a high tally, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
