Diane Ladd, Known For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at the Age of 89.
This Academy Award-nominated actor the celebrated Diane Ladd passed away aged 89.
The star, whose filmography spanned Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, died at her home at her Ojai, California home. This announcement was announced via an announcement by her offspring, award-winning actress Laura Dern, her daughter.
Laura Dern, who starred with Diane Ladd in various films including Wild at Heart, called her “my wonderful hero and my special gift of a mother”, writing that she was by her side when she passed.
“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, star, artist as well as compassionate soul that felt like a dream come true,” she stated. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
Beginnings and Major Success
The start of her career saw small roles in TV shows including Gunsmoke while that decade featured her performing with the legendary Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
That very year, 1974, she shared the screen alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese praised film the movie Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting earned Ladd her first Oscar nomination as best supporting actress.
Subsequent Years
In the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film the movie Black Widow as well as funny follow-up National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation while also joining Alice, a television series inspired by Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
During the next ten years, she received a further best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her performance in Lynch’s Wild at Heart where she acted as the mom of her biological child the character played by Dern. The next year she received a further nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose, another movie which also starred her daughter.
“This was the film which Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she flew me and Laura to London for a royal premiere and a party in our honor,” Ladd recalled of Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, taking our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”
The 1990s included parts in humorous films Cemetery Club bringing her back with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a comedy about politics, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she played the mother of Dern once more. Those years also brought her Emmy nominations for roles in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom plus Touched by an Angel.
Collaborations with Daughter
She persisted in performing with her daughter in films blending humor and drama the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s Inland Empire, a surreal film and the series by Mike White dark comedy series Enlightened. She additionally starred next to Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Her later TV roles included the series Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.
Writing and Directing
She also authored and directed the comedy film Mrs Munck featuring her and previous spouse Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a talented star,” she noted. “I was honored to direct him in a film. In fact, I’m the only woman in history to direct her ex-husband. I humorously say: ‘I advise females, if you want revenge, guide your former spouse.’ But I’m only kidding.”
Personal Life
She happened to be a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a major inspiration throughout my life”.
In 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with a respiratory illness and told she only had half a year left yet she recovered completely after her daughter moved her to another medical facility.
“When you use your pain and prevent it from festering like a sore or something, instead use it to explore, to illuminate the way for yourself and others, then you are winning,” Ladd remarked.
