A ethical foundation of any advanced culture is to stop the more powerful from attacking and exploiting the weaker. Failing that, we would be trapped in a conflict of all against all where might makes right wins.
This concept is embedded of America’s founding documents. It is equally the heart of the modern framework of international relations supported by the United States, built on multilateralism, democratic governance, individual liberties, and the rule of law.
But, it is a fragile construct, often broken by those who seek to abuse their authority. Maintaining it demands that the those in charge have a sense of duty to avoid seeking short-term wins, and that the rest of us ensure they answer for their actions if they don't.
Unchecked strength does not equal right. It makes for instability, upheaval, and hostilities.
Whenever people or corporations or countries that are advantaged target and use those that are not, the structure of our shared norms unravels. If such aggression are not contained, the structure collapses. If not stopped, the world can fall into chaos and war. History provides ample precedent.
Today, we live in a global community with deepening divides. Influence and wealth are more concentrated than in modern history. This invites the privileged to exploit the less fortunate because they perceive themselves as above the law.
The fortunes of a handful of ultra-wealthy individuals is almost beyond comprehension. The reach of major corporations in technology, energy, and aerospace extends over a vast portion of the world. AI is could centralize economic and political clout even more. The destructive power of the major powers is unmatched in the annals of time.
Empowered by a compliant faction and an accommodating judicial body, the presidency has been made into the most powerful and unaccountable instrument of state power in history.
Consider this confluence and you perceive the threat.
A direct line ties earlier lawless actions to current provocations. Each were founded upon the overconfidence of invincibility.
One observes much the same in the actions of other powers: in wars of aggression, in coercive diplomacy, and in the worldwide exploitation by powerful corporate entities.
However, strength without restraint does not make right. It fosters instability, upheaval, and war.
Historical evidence demonstrates that laws and norms to check the influential also protect them. If these guardrails are removed, their insatiable demands for greater influence and riches in time cause their collapse – along with their enterprises, countries, or domains. And threaten international catastrophe.
Such lawlessness will haunt international stability – and the very idea of civilization – for the foreseeable future.
