Former US treasury secretary Lawrence Summers is departing from the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.

Summers commented in an announcement that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the prospects of the company, and look forward following their advancement".

Summers, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on recently that he would be withdrawing from public commitments due to his connections with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

In additional comments, the technology organization expressed it accepted Summers' determination to resign.

"We value his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the governing body," the company stated.

Political Context

This news arrives after the two houses of the US legislature agreed on this week to endorse a bill that would require the federal prosecutors to make public its documents on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will then move to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he intends to approve the legislation, after changing his position on the subject following pressure from his followers.

Email Contents

A collection of Epstein-connected emails released by the House Oversight Committee recently included multiple well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The messages revealed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with he often attempting to connect the official to prominent global figures.

Individual Statement

After the messages were shared with the public, Summers expressed he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised judgment to persist in corresponding with Mr Epstein".

He added that he desired "to reestablish trust and fix bonds with the persons nearest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held leadership roles under party leaders; acting as Treasury chief under President Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He presided over the institution from five years and is still a professor there. When announcing his departure from public roles earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Washington think tank, a left-leaning think tank in DC where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was not associated with the organization.

The former official entered the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in last year - following a defeated move to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
