France urges residents to leave the West African nation immediately amid jihadist fuel blockade

Fuel queues in Mali
Extended lines have been wrapping around gas stations

The French Republic has released an urgent warning for its nationals in Mali to evacuate as soon as feasible, as militant groups maintain their blockade of the state.

The France's diplomatic corps recommended nationals to depart using commercial flights while they remain available, and to avoid surface transportation.

Petroleum Shortage Worsens

A 60-day petroleum embargo on the West African country, established by an al-Qaeda-aligned organization has overturned everyday activities in the main city, the urban center, and different parts of the landlocked African nation - a one-time French territory.

France's declaration coincided with the global shipping giant - the largest global shipping company - revealing it was ceasing its services in the country, citing the blockade and deteriorating security.

Insurgent Actions

The jihadist group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin has created the hindrance by attacking petroleum vehicles on major highways.

The country has limited sea access so all fuel supplies are transported by highway from adjacent countries such as Senegal and the coastal nation.

Diplomatic Actions

Last month, the American diplomatic mission in the capital stated that secondary embassy personnel and their households would leave Mali during the situation.

It said the gasoline shortages had affected the energy distribution and had the "capacity to disturb" the "comprehensive stability environment" in "unforeseen manners".

Leadership Background

Mali is currently ruled by a military leadership led by the military leader, who originally assumed authority in a government overthrow in recent years.

The armed leadership had popular support when it assumed control, vowing to handle the long-running security crisis caused by a separatist rebellion in the north by nomadic populations, which was then hijacked by radical groups.

Foreign Deployment

The United Nations stabilization force and French forces had been deployed in the past decade to address the growing rebellion.

The two have departed since the armed leadership gained power, and the security leadership has employed foreign security contractors to combat the instability.

Nevertheless, the militant uprising has continued and large parts of the north and east of the country continue away from official jurisdiction.
