The Red Devils Poised to Sign Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Signing for United

The forward, with six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having scored more than 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.

Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant boost to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:

  1. The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japan midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a club in the American league, added: “You can feel how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
