The White Sox Land Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Lucrative Two-Year Contract.
In a major move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have signed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a lucrative contract bringing in the power-hitting player.
Deal Structure and Added Benefits
The agreement includes a substantial signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, alongside salaries of $16M for the upcoming season and $17 million for the final year.
Importantly, Murakami's 2027 salary is subject to escalators based on award achievements in 2026:
- An additional $1M for winning the league MVP award.
- $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
- $250K for ranking between fourth and tenth.
- Another $250,000 for earning the top rookie honor.
His deal also stipulates that he cannot be assigned to the minors without his approval and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the contract. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and travel costs between Japan and the U.S..
Posting Fee and Franchise History
As part of the transaction, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization would also receive a 15% cut of 15% triggered salary escalators.
Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese-born to play for the White Sox, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu once managed Murakami while both were in Japan.
Player Profile
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 in February, bolsters a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a last-place season, placing last in the American League Central but representing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami made history with a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, eclipsing the all-time record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to secure Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was limited to 56 games due to an oblique injury. Despite recording 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 driven in.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Early in his career playing mainly at first base, he has spent most of his time to the hot corner.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's heroics were on full display during the last World Baseball Classic. In the penultimate game against Mexico, he hit a game-ending two-base hit that brought home teammates for a thrilling one-run win. The next night in the championship game against the USA, he hit a game-tying homer in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's eventual title triumph.
The power hitter is set to be unveiled at a media availability on Monday.
