US Mediates Ukrainian Talks in the UAE as Trump Administration Seeks for Peace Deal

High-level talks with American, Russian, and Ukrainian officials began in the United Arab Emirates this Tuesday, representing the latest phase in initiatives to broker a peace agreement to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Key Delegates and Initial Talks

US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll allegedly conferred with a Moscow team on Monday night, with discussions extending into Tuesday.

“Discussions are progressing positively and we maintain hope. Secretary Driscoll is closely synchronised with the White House ... as these talks progress,” a spokesman remarked.

The Ukrainian top intelligence official, the head of military intelligence, was also expected to join in the meetings, though the exact format was uncertain whether direct engagement with Moscow’s delegates would happen or if separate bilateral sessions would be conducted.

The composition of the Russian team was unconfirmed. “I have nothing to say. Our position is to monitor press coverage,” a Russian representative told official outlets.

Background and Revised Peace Plan

The current meetings come after recent negotiations in a European nation where US and Ukrainian officials revised a preliminary US proposal for resolving the war.

Moscow has not yet accepted the latest draft of the plan and is unlikely to agree to many of the Kyiv amendments.

Russia’s top diplomat, the Russian diplomat, declared that any modified agreement must embody the “essence and wording” of what was discussed during earlier high-level meetings between the two countries.

International Responses and Apprehensions

European leaders are reportedly finding it difficult to stay engaged in the negotiations as American officials assume control.

The Finnish president, a European figure, who has stepped forward as a primary mediator between the US and European leaders, commented that the coming days would be critical in efforts to find a resolution.

He reportedly held discussions with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the alliance officials, stating that “The future of Ukraine is for Ukraine to decide, and European security is for Europe to decide.”

Meanwhile, the France’s leader, the French official, warned against a peace deal that would amount to a “concession” for the nation.

“The current proposal indicates what Moscow might find acceptable. Does that mean that it is what must be accepted by the Ukrainians and the Europeans? Absolutely not,” he affirmed.

Details of the Initial American Plan

American plan was originally composed of multiple articles and was drawn from dialog between American and Moscow officials, with contributions from Ukrainian defense authorities.

Major aspects of the plan allegedly included:

  • Ukraine relinquishing areas presently held by Moscow
  • Additional zones that might be expected to be willingly surrendered
  • Restrictions on the size of the military forces
  • Amnesty for all parties in the conflict regarding violations

Latest Developments and Ongoing Challenges

The US representative reportedly traveled to the Ukrainian capital to inform the Ukrainian president on the plan and urge quick approval.

The pressure, coupled with the leaking of the plan, apparently shocked Ukrainian and European officials.

Zelenskyy reportedly that the nation was facing one of the toughest periods in its existence and was being forced to choose between “forfeiting self-respect or abandoning a crucial supporter.”

Later, Driscoll informed alliance ambassadors on the plan in Kyiv, with one attendee labeling it as “a disastrous gathering” and stating that European ambassadors were stunned by both the content and tone of the delivery.

The US administration later softened its position, indicating that the comprehensive proposal was an “starting position for talks” rather than a final ultimatum.

Military Situation During Negotiations

While peace efforts proceed, Russian forces has maintained its nightly attacks on Ukrainian cities.

Moscow’s forces reportedly launched dozens of missiles and hundreds of unmanned aircraft at objectives in and around the capital, as stated by Ukrainian sources.

The Ukrainian president stressed that the Kremlin must not believe it could win the conflict while negotiations were ongoing.

“What matters most now is that all partners move toward diplomacy together, through joint efforts. Sanctions and pressure on Moscow must yield outcomes,” he affirmed.

Kyiv’s mayor reported that seven people had been fatally injured in the overnight assault on the capital.
